end up sucking cold winter air through their battery bank.

That is the other reason I put on the blower. It helps to help keep the
battery warmer by drawing inside air  through the battery box.
If the box is in the basement it will tend to draw air into the vent pipe,
through the box and exhaust into the building. To get a vent to work in the
northern climates at least you need the blower.
