I have heard numerous stories of battery explosions over the past 25
years of swapping tall tales, and was nearly witness to one. Every
one involved high stupidity (overcharging using raggedy alligator
clips, welding over a car battery on boost charge .... Each resulted
in cell tops blowing off, indicating that it was the H2 inside the
cell(s) that exploded, although an accumulation above may have begun
the reaction.
I have been told that it's difficult to contain a dangerous level H2
unless you try pretty hard. It seeps through any common porous
material. I have added passive ventilation in some cases mainly to
please the critical, or to add confidence. I hate to see people go
overboard and end up sucking cold winter air through their battery
bank.
