There's a "right-brain" balance thought I want to put out here that in
implicit but unstated in your posting. It's in this part: "I watch the
ampere-hour figures in relation to battery volts and battery current.... I
check this against the ampere-hour count on the three meters and reset the
meters if necessary. " You and Windy and some other well-respected souls
are "grandpa wrenches", from the days when there was no industry, and every
system included home-made parts. The users were real pioneers, who were
themselves tech-heads,involved in their systems, nursing them along, living
well.
I'm a "second-generation wrench", coming along when there's an
(admittedly immature and imperfect) industry. My job is more selecting,
combining, and installing existing manufactured stuff than making it on a
lathe or soldering bench. My customer base is different, too, especially in
Santa Fe, New Mexico. Solar has a strong history here, in many forms, and
my average customer isn't a tech-head. It's an average person who has seen
or heard enough by now to want an "off-grid passive solar straw-bale with
infloor radiant heat". OK, only a few have that whole-enchilada view, but
my point is that it's critical that we install systems that take care of
themselves as much as possible. Our average customer will never relate
amp-hour figures to battery volts, unless we're doing phone support with
them at the time. And it's also why we ALWAYS include a good
monitor-generally a Tri-Met-in the system.
