Hi There !!

Here in NZ I have solved the same phantom load problem with fax and answering
machines in a similar way.
I designed a simple acoustic relay that worked from the sound of the bells. It had
an adjustable timer also and you just 'piggy-back' plugged the unit and the fax
together which eliminated the need for any dedicated wiring.
My unit will only work if the audible sound of the ring is available from a phone
in parallel with the fax, or a fax that will still ring without AC power.
