Steve Willey builds and sells a similar device, and it's been working 
well here for over a year now for my fax  machine. Someone ought to 
write a Things that Work! about it... Your project sounds like a good 
Home Brew for HP too.

I'm still trying to avoid the first "always on" AC load here, so I 
sympathize with Roy's customer and others.
