Thank you for the suggestion.  We started with some Polaris connectors but
they were just too big.  Same may be true with the piercing splices but
worth considering.

I was worrying about the legality of the power flow as well.  I posed the
question in a separate post.

You might try an insulation piercing connector for this application:

Also, not to get nit-picky, but you might be in violation of the 120% rule
if that is a load side tap.
