[RE-wrenches] Fw: Ever seen flooded battery charging parameters like this?

Hello, Wrenches...

This 30% is usually an absolute max. Optimum would be dependent on the battery chemistry but is usually about 10-20% C20 Rate. The Optimum has to do with absorb time, rather than what the battery can take as, once past the bulk stage the battery is going to "self-regulate" how much current it can accept. With a voltage controlled charger such as most of the RE inverters/controllers (Schneider, Outback, Magnum, Midnite, and SMA), deep cycle batteries are basically large capacitors, you can over charge voltage, but you can't really push more current (At least a healthy battery) than a battery can store.

It's during the bulk stage that it's important to limit the amount of current as excessive current will cause problems with the plates, welds, or separators. Too much heat will warp the plates, which can eventually cause premature failure.

Most batteries can accept up to that 30%, but battery temp compensation should be used, as a BTS will help limit the amount of current/voltage the battery sees during that bulk/absorption stage.

It's important to make sure you check with the battery manufacture for what their minimums and maximums are before install.

Hi Guys,

Calling for 30% C for max charge current on flooded batt. Pretty aggressive don't you think?

Even more strange is the spec for 2V cells. They call for 20% for flooded but only 15% for gel/AGM? usually gel/agms take HIGHER max charge rate than flooded don't they?
Thanks,
Eric
