[RE-wrenches] Solar Presentations for Kids

The first time I did a presentation for kids, and I have done several, I
used good old Power Point since it too was only an hour.

I started with .where does electricity come from, what stops when it goes
away. Light switch/outlet, breaker panel, meter etc until we got to a big
generating power plant with 'smoke' stacks.

Then steam power-150 years ago & still in use today today. Fuel for heat:
wood, oil, coal NG, [a fairly detailed 3 slides on] nuclear, hydro and
bio-fuel. Most use steam but burning stuff for heat to make steam is not
efficient. Then wind & solar.

Lots of big cool pictures of some familiar and some new things like a
landfill, 100+ car coal train [2 days worth], big turbine blade and two pie
charts.

I don't treat them like little kids, I expect that they are smarter than I
was in 5th grade. They will get it because they are in school and they know
they are there to be quiet and listen. And when I stopped mid-sentence and
stared straight at the loudmouth showoff - he shut up and watched the rest
of the program. Remember you [an adult] are in charge now not the teacher.

If you can't relate well to kids [I have 6 grandkids] it may be awkward to
relax and feel comfortable.

I'll share my slides if you're interested.

Subject: [RE-wrenches] Solar Presentations for Kids

I'm looking for an idea, project, or pre-made kit to engage a group of 6-10
year old kids for an hour. I've been doing PowerPoint presentations and
games in the past for these types of events, but I'm finding it a bit stale.
Any ideas to create a little more excitement and wonder?
