We also use the UniRac star head bolts and break-away nuts for any ground mounted array in an area that appears to be a higher risk. Since they are a little pricey, we use two per module located at diagonal corners which should discourage most potential thieves.

We do not see the need to engrave the module frames as this is easy to grind off and not really necessary since most module manufacturers add a unique bar code and serial number tag under the glass near the top of each module. This is easy to see when facing the array and should serve to identify a stolen module since you would have to break the glass or tear off the sealed backing to remove it.

There are several theft prevention and tracking organizations where for a small annual fee you or your client can provide a list of serial or VIN numbers of high cost equipment or parts which they will record and monitor all national lists of recovered goods. When anything is recovered, the police and insurance companies check these lists to try and locate the owner, and yes, this service also includes checking pawn shops.

With larger high cost modules now being used on most ground mounted arrays, it would not take long for Mr.Con and a pick-up truck to back up, un-bolt, and drive off with $15,000.00 worth of modules.

Here are a few links to these organizations:
