Wrenches & Bruce -
We use exclusively - butyl rubber tape from McMaster Carr. We place the
tape 2" wide under ALL roof penetrations (L feet or Stanchions). We also
use the BR tape for wrapping pipe penetrations at the flashings, all
penetrations through exterior walls. It contracts and expands with the
weather. Over time is does not get hard. Temperature range is -20 to 180
F. This stuff is a bit pricey, but well worth the expense because it is
always pliable, easy to use, and we have never had a failure in over 500+
installations. We learned of this product from an eastern off grid
contractor how has been using it for over 15 years.
