Battery Fuel Gauge [RE-wrenches]

I wonder if on a grid tied system the benefit of a charge controller 
that talks to the meter might now be outweighed by one trading for a 
charge controller that cannot talk to the grid tied inverter which is 
supposed to help keep the selling optimized?
