SIPs [RE-wrenches]

Hi Daryl,
I've worked with an SIP roof top. We added 15.5" wide UniSolar laminates on
16" wide McElroy metal pans, which had some rubber type of underlayment and
that's it. So with the thin-film laminate product we avoided the entire set
of issues you're suggesting with the common mounting of framed solar modules
and arrays. The metal rooftops with PV lams looks really super nice.

>From the sound of it though, you may have other concerns such as available
rooftop area to work with for desired output. We had over 1500 sq. ft. to
cover, over half the sq. ft. of the home, plus a detached garage and its 750
sq. ft on S. side of that rooftop. Total was just over 9kW if I recall
(DC).

In my opinion, however, "sandwiching" the SIP roof panels would not cause so
much compression as to be of issue, particularly if your talking about
"plating" both sides of the sandwich. I would still penetrate the roof with
additional fasteners (and glue) for the plates, probably more like 6" square
plates, and holes for additional fasteners in all four corners. This may
also help in the placement and accurate positioning of the plates for your
sandwich "through-bolt," which may save you some labor time.

Perhaps not wisdom, so just my two cents worth of something...

Perhaps the metal pan rooftop can keep you from walking away, project owner
willing... he does need a roofing product still, correct?

Just write back off-list if you'd like some pictures to show the prospective
client.

Peter

Fellow wrenches,
I looked at a job today with a SIP roof. It is 1/2 Avantek on inside
and outside with 9" of foam sandwiched between. It is a post and beam
garage with roof space of 32'X18'.
The customer would like a +/- 4kw grid tied array.
Has anyone worked with this type of roof and developed a dependable,
high quality way to attach solar arrays to it. I was thinking of getting
some 3/16 galvanized steel stock, possibly 4" wide and spanning the
width of the mount and mounting the mounting feet on top of one piece
while sandwiching the roof by placing another matching piece of steel on
the inside (it's storage space for the garage). I would then use
galvanized steel or stainless steel threaded rod to "through-bolt" the
mount/steel stock/sip roof/steel stock with appropriate hardware. I do
worry about compressing the roof.
Wisdom/two cents anyone? Thanks for any help with this. I could just
walk away from it if I can't do it right.
