Hi Nik-

Go for it (with an experienced sub!)  We had a successful job on the OH
Gov's mansion with a steep slate roof - We hired a slate specialist AND
arranged to use their scaffold and roof ladders - they had these great
custom fabed steel ladders with big roof hooks and carpet padding...  The
slate guys installed the standoffs and flashing and flashed our conduit
penetration... It was amazing to watch them work, using hammers as saws....
The racking and panels went up smoothly, with us working off the horizontal
rack struts.  We pretty much had a "don't touch the slate" rule. ALSO - keep
the area below your work roped off... if a slate does fall it could be
deadly.  The slate roof house I grew up in sometimes dropped on and it
sliced into the turf about 4"!
