The shelf life of "dry-charged" batteries is not indefinite. There is a
slow breakdown that varies with temperature and humidity. I was once
given some 20-year old military surplus batteries that had spent at
least a good part of that time stored here in New Mexico. I filled them
and applied the typical "activation charge". Some cells failed fairly
quickly, then remaining batteries were of some use in a backup system
for a couple years, but they weren't all they could be.
I was told that the dry climate of storage would have helped them store
much longer than the typical warranty limit of 1 year. Apparently it
did, but not indefinitely.
