Original message:

Doug;

I'm not doing any electrolyte replacement. I did have an
in-person conversation with Richard a few years back about the cadmium
problem when fiddling with the chemicals, and I think I'd stick with NiFe
cells if I was going to attempt that one.

Mr Sharkey,
                        You may be losing some good cells by not doing this.
The electrolyte is only mixed to 1250SG, same as for acid in lead acid
batteries. If you take care you stand no more risk of harm from electrolyte
than we are used to. My understanding is that the "plates" in NiCd do not
degrade unless they suffer carbonisation from CO2 absorbtion out of the air.
If these cells have been sitting unused the plates *may* be in pretty good
nick. The question is where did the electrolyte go in the low cells? If it
was spilt, you would need to replace it with 1250 KOH. If it has evaporated,
replace with pure water.

Cheers,
Bruce Geddes
