Most smoke detectors designed for alarm system use can be ordered with a builtin local audible alert. These typically run on 12V or 24V DC.

We used to sell & install home automation systems (including fire) for Honeywell. At the time, NEC required 120VAC smoke detectors--even when a full central office monitored fire alarm system (with backup battery) was installed. We were able to get around it in some cases with the local AHJ approval. In an off-grid house there is a compelling case for running them on DC. Maybe the NEC has woken up on this issue?
