Colleagues:

I had asked here before about data acquisition. Thanks for the several
replies I received.

No one is using the system I described: Many times I have a customer that
tells me something like: "My generator starts every morning between 5:00
AM and 9:00 AM. Why dose this happen?" or "My system shuts down every night."

Both of these scenarios are battery voltage related. I don't really want
to camp out on the power shed floor all night with a thermos of espresso
and watch a battery meter. One of my Fluke 87s will tell me the voltage
minimum, maximum and average over 36 hours, but it won't tell me what the
voltage was at any given moment in time.

I just purchased a unit just now that I think will satisfy this need:

http://www.dataq.com/products/startkit/di158.htm

I ordered the 158U which will read +/- 64 volts. This should allow a
direct connection to a 48 volt battery bank. I've looked at a lot of these
systems in the last few days, so I may be confused, but I believe that the
inputs are optically isolated, protecting the computer from stupid
connection errors. I have a retired notebook computer I can leave on a job
indefinitely. I can also hook up shunts for current monitoring and
probably even temperature sensing.

Now I might be able to track system performance in detail over time. I'll
run this gizmo through it's paces over the next few weeks and report back,
if anybody else is interested.
