I recommend the new (relatively) inverter generators offered by Honda and
Yamaha to most of my customers. The 3KW units fit in nicely with providing
emergency backup in case the OutBack FX2K inverter fails. They also charge
the battery bank very well with the OutBack FX inverter/charger. I have seen
a Honda 3k inverter generator run for 6.5 hours on 2.2 gallons of gasoline
and charge up a bank of batteries with 9kwhrs (372 Amp hours at 24vdc).
During part of this time the generator was also powering a front loading
washer and an LP gas dryer (2 loads) while also running the other ac loads
(radio, and cf lights).

Kurt and Tom,

What you guys are leaving out of the equation, and Hugh isn't, is that if
and WHEN your really cool inverter suffers a setback of some kind, you're
out of power if you use a DC generator. No two ways about it. (Unless you
keep a spare inverter in the closet)

Also, the ability to run directly from a DC generator to a DC inverter is a
moot point unless the loads you're running are = to the gen. output; forget
surge loads without a battery bank!

We have had direct experience with the Polar Power DC generators (that use
Lister/Petter engines) and found the charge controls to be virtually useless
(no temp. compensation) These are not your run of the mill, inexpensive sets
either.

The customer, who (fortunately) purchased the set directly from Polar has
been extremely unhappy with the entire arrangement and has expressed his
regret at having not gone for the AC set with a good charger.

High frequency multiphase AC alternators can be very efficient (and are what
is used in the DC gensets.)  It's the 50/60 Hz synchronous stuff which
suffers in comparison, particularly WRT weight and size.

I saw several new high efficiency alternators at PowerGen last year--there
should be a few more choices on the market soon, especially with all the
progress in inverters.

Wondering if one of those high voltage units could be rectified and used
with a string inverter?
