Tom Lane and others,
Since no one else is chiming in here I can only assume that I am
wrong, and I thank you for enlightening me.
I really was not aware that AC generators were so terribly
inefficient. My experience of using my DC welding generator to
charge my batteries has not been that brilliant.
I wonder why there are so many systems being installed using
synchronising sine wave inverters, SW, FX etc... We should ignore AC
generators and sell our customers DC generators. Why didn't we do
this years ago? Why is there even a market for the SW and other
inverter/chargers? What's going on??
I shall have to study the matter and find out how many kWh of AC per
gallon you can expect from a well loaded conventional generator and
compare this with how many kWh/gal you can get from a DC machine.
Perhaps you can offer this information or suitable links? I really
am surprised by what you are telling me and very puzzled that these
super-efficient generators have not caught on to more widespread use
and made inverter/chargers obsolete. They must be very good if they
can win out, even with the added penalty of the inverter losses (10%
ish I believe) and the rectifier losses.
When I referred to the battery cycling losses, I assumed that you
were talking about a regime where you rely on brief high charge
boosts from the generator. That's what I was trying to argue against.
Learning something new every day and sorry for wasting your time.
Still very puzzled and wondering how it can be better to produce DC
if what you need is AC but I'll gradually get my head around it if
it's really more efficient....
