High frequency multiphase AC alternators can be very efficient (and are what is used in the DC gensets.) It's the 50/60 Hz synchronous stuff which suffers in comparison, particularly WRT weight and size.
I saw several new high efficiency alternators at PowerGen last year--there should be a few more choices on the market soon, especially with all the progress in inverters.
Wondering if one of those high voltage units could be rectified and used with a string inverter?
