Voltage limiting w/ C40 [RE-wrenches]

Brad,

A voltage regulator chip is a cheap and simple way to drop the 
voltage. Unlike a true voltage converter, it drops the excess volts 
by dissipating heat (wasting the energy), but in this case, so what?

These chips are available from electronic parts suppliers for just a 
few bux. You wire in a small control resistor according to a chart 
(or use a pot) to set the regulating voltage. The ones I've seen take 
up to 35V input.

You'll need to multiply the max. volts that you drop by the current = 
watts of heat to dissipate. Then, bolt it to a heat sink sufficient 
to dissipate that many watts.
