Gary,
Overflow not normal, and is very undesirable, with any type of cap. A
slight amount of moisture accumulation is all that should occur.
It sounds like the batteries are getting overfilled. They should be
filled only to the bottom of the filler neck that protrudes down from
the top (that's typically about 3/4" down from the top).
The liquid expands as the battery charges, so if the battery is low
in charge when it is filled, it can overflow later. If a low-charged
battery needs water, keep the level low in anticipation of its rising.
