Yes, I would have turned her down or more likely said, either the big resistance
loads go onto the grid only panel, or I will not do this system for you. Did you
also put her electric range, oven and clothes dryer on the inverter?

I mean, what was the point of the back up battery inverter system? Was it to
provide reasonable running back up time for reasonable loads, or to dump all the
stored power foolishly into a nonsensical load and in the process making the
whole system not provide any back up for other loads?

A well insulated tank of hot water would last about 2-3 days (if careful) so
unless there would be a utility outage of over 3 days she wouldn't even know the
difference except for the water heater load exhausting the entire system which
would remove the backup power from more important loads like the refrigerator,
well pump, cordless telephone, furnace fan / ignitor, and lighting loads. Yeah,
she gets get few BTU's into that hot water tank but in the process lost her food
in the fridge, communication with no working telephone TV or radio, sits in the
dark with no lighting, no heat if the inverter powered a fuel oil heating
system, and if there is a well pump no pressurized water for drinking, toilets
or to pump out that almighty important hot water.

I guess we just have different criteria for our system designs.
