flooded v. sealed batteries [RE-wrenches]

For off-grid applications, where do my fellow Wrenches stand (or sit) on the
question of using L16s, say, as opposed to sealed AGM or gel batteries?  My
hit has been that sealed batteries, either AGM or gel, are not a good choice
for frequent and possibly deep cycling.  Any of you who can guide me to some
on-line links or literature on this issue?  Thanks.
