Contrails is short for condensation trails. They are primarily water 
vapor, thus man-made clouds.

I can't imagine how they are going to reduce sun intensity, unless 
the sunshine is passing right through the trail/cloud.

Solar loss due to uniform pollution of the atmosphere is a separate 
issue. I've seen solar intensity reduced by 25% by a polluted sky, 
where the sky looked blue and people didn't notice it. However, PV 
output was reduced accordingly.
