Roach tables made of boric acid are available from hardware stores. Liberally placed in battery boxes, etc it help keep the bugs and critters out.  Also cayenne pepper (available from bird food stores) mixed in varnish or paint and painted on your wires will keep rodents from chewing the wires - unless they are from Louisiana. A bug milkshake, sprayed, will keep bugs out of your garden too.
