wackos in Waco [RE-wrenches]

I read an op-ed piece this week written by some yahoo editor at a newspaper in Texas that made my blood boil. It was a classic hit-piece on us pie-in-the-sky RE advocates. In light of the recent global conference on sustainable development in South Africa, which has garnered a lot of press coverage on RE goals, etc., this editor made the usual claims of RE being a unrealistic pipe dream, claiming that the only reason RE contributes anything is because of the large government subsidies supporting it. What he of course failed to mention is the much larger subsidies, tax breaks, tax write-offs, etc. that are provided by the US government to the oil, natural gas and coal industries. (Nuclear power exists only because of the Price-Anderson Act which limits nuke plant owners and operators to a fixed liability in case of catastrophic accidents.) At least, I believe that the fossil fuel industries receive substantial supports from the feds. Can anyone provide me or point me in the direction of verifying the degree of support that the carbon dioxode-spewing non-RE industries receive? Michael W., I bet you have some info on this topic. Thanks in advance for any help.

>From Rowland Nethaway column(Waco Tribune Herald) Wed. Sept. 4:
"Windmills, solar panels, electric cars, hydrogen fuel cells and other
popular sources of renewable energy do not stand up on their own feet in
the real world.
No matter how desirable it is to convert the world's energy production
from oil and gas to nonpolluting alternative fuels, the fact remains
that wind, solar, and the other sources cannot compete unless they are
propped up with subsidies."

I wonder if he really thinks that the power company actually built those
(coal, nat. gas, nuclear) power plants with money out of their own
pockets? Further, what percentage of the defense budget does he think
has nothing to do with protecting the oil flow?

His address: RNethaway at wacotrib.com. I am composing my letter to the
editor at this time. (letters at wacotrib.com)

Selling solar in this part of the world is a challenge, but somebody has
to do it.
