[RE-wrenches] Two Dilemmas

Taking these cells out of the tray is an extra step that might be avoided.
(Often the cells are soldered together, so that prevents removal unless you
are prepared to drill and re-solder, a very specialized skillset.)  There
is rarely enough headroom in your battery room to set up a hoist to reload
the trays, so that technique can be a dead-end for more multiple reasons.



We purchased a special order, narrower than usual pallet jack (see attached
photo, not more than $250) to handle the loaded trays.  We eventually
welded up a simple “shoe” to keep the tray more stable on the pallet jack.
I can provide more photos off-line if you wish.



We place a pressure treat 4X4 or 4X6 support cross-wise where the far end
of where the tray will reside and another pressure treat in a T shape so
the pallet jack will straddle the second block.  We drive the pallet jack
over the blocks and lower the tray right onto the blocks.  We drive the
pallet jack out and drive another 4X4 crosswise under the front.  Done!



Getting the trays on your trailer and back off at the job requires a crane
or forklift with a bridle, but the same is true if you are trying to unload
cells.  Therefore with this technique you need almost the same equipment,
just subtract the chain hoist and add the pallet jack.



(In our shop this narrow pallet jack has become indispensable.  It is more
versatile than the stock-width units.  One of my favorite tools.)
