You may want to check in w/Outback again. I have what I believe to be the only 3 phase 9 stack (3 per phase) VFX 3648 system in use. It was not smooth to get it up and working but it seems that Outback has it licked now as we have been running for several months now w/o a hickup and under extremely challenging site and load conditions. It is possible that Outback would like to keep an eye on this longer before officially releasing and supporting this configuration.
Regarding large UPS type of inverters, they are just not well suited for o-t-g applications. Pitiful chargers, controls, genset interface, and appaling efficiency and idle current have always shot them down for me. Sat-Con has always claimed to be able to make an o-t-g inverter and have done so once or twice, but when I contacted them they wanted over $30k (more than the inverter cost!) just for the NRE. I refused to pay for their product development and took a pass. One day someone will pick-up the tab for this and pave the road for the rest of us, this time it was not to be me!
Again - we sure need large o-t-g inverters....
