Islanding [RE-wrenches]

Islanding conditions can be created in a lab with the proper values 
of inductive and capacitive reactance. But it's considered to be an 
impossibility that the conditions will exist in a real world 
environment. On a recent trip to Trace, Tobin Booth gave us a quick 
tour of a piece of test equipment that allowed them to create 
islanded conditions in order to test and develop their UI inverter 
software. It was basically an adjustable bank of capacitors and 
inductors.

If you haven't checked out the site before, don't let the home page 
scare you off. Enter inverters as the search category.

Trace's literature department will send you a copy of PG&E's 
acceptance of Trace's SW series inverters. I distributed this letter 
to utilities during Oregon's roller coaster net metering effort. I'm 
pretty sure there's also a recent acceptance letter from a NY utility 
regarding the Sun-Tie inverters on Trace's website. I don't recall 
the specifics.

Finally, Don's suggestion of using IEEE 929 is an excellent one. 
Throw that at hesitant utilities and they'll probably quiet down for 
a spell.
