Jason and all,
Regarding battery disconnect for Fire Dept. Last spring when I pulled permits for two
systems here in San Luis Obispo , the issuing official indicated that the one that had the
PV and batt at the opposite end of the house from the meter ( long and narrow at that)
would require clear indication at the main service of the presence of an alternate source
of power and the location of system components. He also said there would have to be a
remote disconnect means for the same at main service.
Needless to say this was cause for much concern to the person who designed and sold the
system, (not me). Calls were made to Trace for remote shut down options and whatnot but
to no avail. By the time the final (and only) inspection was called for, I had talked to
Bill Brooks at PV USA who referenced conversations he had with building officials in San
Jose who had concluded that remote shut down was not required but a location notice was, as
I recall.
Meanwhile, in SLO town, we were required to install a 60 amp disconnect on the outside of
garage on the Trace output to satisfy the citys concern with power disconnect to back up
panel. With that done we had only to indicate at the main service the location of this
disconnect for the fire dept.
As I recall, the talk with Bill included the idea that firemen are prepared for various and
dangerous situations and with adequate warning can de-energize the alternate power source
before choping through walls etc.
It was a pretty simple fix for this job. In the future I know what to plan for.
Ri-i-ght !
