Jumping in..... I have a couple customers with stand-alone systems that
are getting reasonable efficiency with General Electric's 10 CF manual
defrost frigs.  Though they are only 9 or 10 cubic foot, and the freezer
is pretty small, I have measured one of them at 750 WH a day average
(G.E. model number begins with TAX10).  I have been following a similar
discussion at CREST's web page and may be getting the two mixed up, but
I make an attempt not to have phantom loads such as those created by a
refirgerator's auto-defrost timer.  Do check out http://www.crest.org. 
Go to their discussion groups then to "PV users".  Even Larry at
Sunfrost has been in on the discussion there.
