Todd chargers in 24 VDC systems [RE-wrenches]

Richard;
Unless it's too late to weigh in on the Todd issue, the final possibility
is to modify the Todd to have a 24v output. While this is probably well
beyond the average wrench's abilities, it's not impossible. You'd need to
change some capacitors and re-wind the transformers. Of course, the output
current would drop to half, but then you could use two modified chargers to
make up the difference. In reality, there is no reason that one charger's
master module couldn't run an unlimited number of slave modules, but that
might be a bit more in depth than we need to get.
Also consider this: Are both of the Todds you are using factory fresh?
Will they make full current on a fairly discharged 12v battery or resistive
load? It is possible for a Todd to partially fail. They have one master and
five slave modules in the 75 amp version, each putting out 15 or so amps.
Each module that dies subtracts 15 amps from the output. Failure of the
master module's PWM circuit kills the charger completely.
If anyone on the list has a dead Todd or Heliotrope charger, I can repair
most any common problems, restoring the unit to working condition. I
wouldn't mind getting ahold of a couple of dead ones to experiment on,
either. 24 volt operation might be easier than you think!
One final comment (gripe, complain, moan...). Considering the low volume
of messages on this list, would it be possible to get comments *without*
all of the original message in the body of the reply? Makes it yet more
difficult to determine if there is new/additional text in the message I
need to respond to. Not to mention disk space, etc... The subject line
should be enough to clue us into the topic under discussion.
Keep those photons working!
