Use a hydrometer (temp compensated) as your guide to charge level, if 
y'er paranoid. I think you'll find that they self-discharge less than 
10% per month. Cold will not increase the self-discharge.

Fully charged, they freeze at -40°F. Fully discharged, it's about +20.

Wind chill? that only applies to heat loss on exposed human skin. 
Batteries will maintain about the average day/night temp.

Charging at low temp is no problem, similar to car battery.

Large batteries (discharged) will form a skim of ice over the top 
well before they freeze solid and crack.

Find something else to worry about.
