There are several small but powerful portables to choose from.
The Grundig YB 400PE seems to be the hot choice these days. Digital, 
AM/FM/SW (damn near all of it), 9VDC (adaptor or 6AAs or easy to 
build or buy a 12VDC-9VDC power supply), external antenna jack, etc. 
$200.00 from Amateur Radio Supply (AES) right there in Milwaukee. 
1-800-558-0411.  Hook you customer up with a couple of sets of high 
capacity NiMH AAs and a Maha charger (works from ac or DC) and 
they'll be rigged up.
Sony and others make good ones as well. I think Richard P. has one. 
Richard? The C.Crane catalog always has a few good choices as well.
The damn ac buzz from the mod.square wave inverters is a major pain. 
It can come not only from the ac output wires, but be on the DC bus, 
and/or be induced thru the freakin air if the radio/antenna is near 
either the inverter or runs parallel to any house wiring. Placement 
is everything and still it can be hard to get rid of with a weak 
signal, especially during the day when AM radio wave propagation is 
poor.
