I have seen a couple of SW units go to "gen auto", in
installations where the gen start function was not
being used. The inverter flashes the error light the
next time the batteries get low and it can't start the
(non-existant) generator. This causes unnecessary
concerns for the customer, and service calls for me.
A little better shielding of their microprocessors,
and some built in lightning protection would go a long
way. (Boy do I have some stories to tell in this
area.) For a while I was returning so many inverters
with lightning damage that they knew me as "the
lightning guy". Since I started using Delta lightning
arrestors we are having much better luck, but still a
handful of lightning related failures per year.
