Hi William,

We have been recently exploring the idea of driven-pipe footings, or ground screws for small pole mounted solar arrays. I'd appreciate any lessons or experiences you have with this to share.

Thanks,

Friends:

I always avoided structural engineering costs. We used recommended footings which were always oversized.

However, as the cost of excavation, concrete and steel has increased, good engineering will pay for itself in reduction of all of the above.

For example, we frequently avoid using excavation and concrete with driven-pipe footings. It's a huge savings in time and materials.

We figured that an extra half yard of concrete is cheap compared to the cost of the digging and form setting. The cost of a 36" sonotube instead of a 32" one is minimal. Peace of mind is priceless.
