[RE-wrenches] Metal roof support flashing

My analysis is that the standing seems needs to be nailed or screwed to the deck every 18" up each seam. In addition the plywood deck needs to be adequately secured to the rafters. Standard installation of a standing seam metal roof is to nail it every 3 to 4'. Putting a big sail up there and connecting it only to the standing seam means you are relying on the connection of the standing seam to the deck and the deck to the rafters.

I would dig a little deeper into your roof construction before pushing forward.

Has anyone ever heard of a standing seam roof actually being damaged or coming loose from a PV array mounted with S-5! clips? We have just sold a few jobs on 2:12, galvalume, s.s. roofs that are 20-30 years old and I just had a structural P.E. look at them today and his feeling is that, even though he can't tell how the frequent or stout the connections are, he thinks the S-5! clips should be fine. He is going to run some calculations but thinks that we should even be able to tilt the modules to 25 degrees. The basic wind speed is 90 mph.

Are worries about standing seam roof connections unfounded or is it time for me to get a new P.E.?
