[RE-wrenches] battery commissioning

Hi Ron,

I would be cautious in purchasing dry product for the reasons you outline.

Dry charge product has it's place and is a definite benefit when shipping to remote locations where transit time / time in customs often exceeds four (4) months in hot climates (see Africa). The reduction in shipping costs will be negated by the cost of purchasing acid and the surcharge for dry product. We charge an additional 8% for Dry Charge as all the plates need to be formed individually (high labour) and the yield is often <92% (high process scrap). Moreover, we can not load or capacity test the dry product prior to shipping, so there is, of course, a slightly higher defect risk.

Regarding activation, it is very straightforward but it is critical that the units are brought to 100% SOC before cycling - you would be surprised how often this does not occur.

I hope this is of assistance and please let me know if I have missed any points.

Regards,

Jamie

Hello Wrenches

Do any of you stock dry charged lead acid batteries and commission
them as needed? If so, what are the advantages/disadvantages of doing
this aside from the obvious requirements for safe handling
procedures? I'm considering this as an option to reduce shipping cost
on large battery consignments and increase storage time but have no
experience in activating batteries from a dry state. I've read the
Surrette activating instructions and it seems easy enough although
I'm wondering if the freight cost advantage will be offset by the
power requirement of charging the batteries.
