Non-electric horse waterers [RE-wrenches]

The non-electric 'freeze proof' livestock waterers do work but beware, 
most require a minimum of 3-5psi at all times. This helps keep the 
ground loop flow active enough to
keep the temp above freezing. I've found that here in the north east, 
there needs to be
a fair amount of usage for them to work. No usage over a 2-3 day period 
in really cold weather is a recipe for freeze up.

I would call these freeze resistant...not freeze proof. But they're a 
lesser evil than 10 kwh
per day for the heaters. FYI....you can install standby heaters in some 
brands of waterer
for those extreme cold events.
