HI Allen April 17, 2008
I just wanted to add to my comments on Retscreen, and
Homer. Both can give you the solar fraction, LOLP,
generator use, the effect of battery sizing, array
sizing and allow determination of optimums. I prefer
Homer for multiple design variations, because once set
up it is less work. (you can do what I call a
parametric studies on Homer much easier) With a few
little workarounds on retscreen you can get similar
results with more time investment.

Many, but not all, of these results will be indicated
with simple logical analysis. I find every time that
there are solutions, sizes and economic opportunities
I did not realize from logical analysis. But in all
cases you need a load profile as a starting point.
You can use both of these software’s to assist in
design of conservation and thermal systems. Also note
they can calculate the loads and values, including
economics of ground source heat pumps.

Hope this helps.
