This device has a pipette for manually testing multiple cells. What about
leaving it in a reference cell? I can think of a couple of reasons why not,
but maybe someone can figure out how to get a continuous SG reading.

Years ago ( this will date some folks) there was a company that had a
unit that replaced a cap in one cell on one battery ( made by
Photron) that sent its into to a unit called a Battery lite.
This device measured SG, and so yep its already been done, but sure
would be helpful now.
Problem is you need an integrated system, which for battery based
isn't done yet.
Think of all the grid tied systems that need some cycling. This
needs to be automatically taken care of and will be an important
selling feature in future
