Grundfos submersible pump compliance with NEC [RE-wrenches]

Monoflo has a number of certifications around the world, but UL is 
considered too expensive, time consuming and a general pain in the butt 
for them to go through the process. I'm sure that it is a similar 
problem for all the other solar pump companies, especially those not a 
large and well funded as Mono and Grundfos. Why, for that matter, does 
an inspector need to see a UL listing at all?
