Slate Roof Attachment? [RE-wrenches]

David,

Slate isn't much fun. We had a slate roofer train us which really helped.
Natural slate has contours and thin and thick spots. If you step on a weak
spot you'll crack the slate. After a bit of practice you'll learn where to
walk. It is best to have a roofer on site or on call to help repair any
slate which cracks during the install. Certain cracks can be repaired with
glue, others require full replacement.

I believe that Quickmounts might be compatible with slate:
http://www.quickrackpv.com/ but I've never used them for slate specifically.
That's what I'd try for my next slate project. You would just have to drill
one hole through the slate.

When we installed on slate a roofer worked with us to flash and seal our
posts. The result was great but it took quite a while because you have to
remove the slate around each standoff and then cut and replace. The roofer
also installed toe boards (aka roof scaffolding) for us because it was so
steep.

Depending on the size of the job and the cost of labor in your neck of the
woods I'd add at least $1 per AC watt.

Is anyone out there doing installations on slate roofs? If so, what is your
preferred attachment and racking detail? Also, what is the cost premium per
watt?

Thanks in advance,

David
