Sunny Island vs Outback [RE-wrenches]

We may have missed threads on this subject, so I apologize in advance if the
information is out there already. If it is I would appreciate the starting
date of the thread(s) and I will track it down.

We have installed four Outback/GroSolar grid-tied battery backup systems,
and two more are various stages of design and bidding. They're relatively
straightforward to deign and install, but I do have some criticisms of their
"rating game" and the fact that the California Energy Commission power
rating and rebate for the 3,600 W (48V) system is surprisingly low.

Here are my questions in no particular order of importance:

(1) If the Outback system is based on "grid-tied loads" and "critical
loads" which are isolated from each other, do the Sunny Island AC2
(gen/grid) and AC1 (loads/SBs) serve the same purpose? With the SI system,
where exactly are the conventional (non-critical) loads connected? To AC2?
To the utility side of the Gen/Grid relay?

(2) If the Outback system has a single set of PV modules and charge
controllers that provide the conditioned voltage on the 48 V buss, and the
Sunny Island system can have a hybrid mixture of conventional grid-tied
PV/inverters and PV/charge controllers - what additional capabilities are
there with the Sunny Island approach? Can the SI approach be configured more
inexpensively for the same functionality.

I have a couple of other questions, but these will suffice for now. Thanks
in advance for the help.
