satellite internet off-grid [RE-wrenches]

Hi Nik,
What little I've seen of cellular internet around here is not very
impressive.
We and several customers use satellite from HughesNet/Direcway (not Direct
TV). No phone line needed now. We have the package that offers download of
up to 1.5 mps for $80/month. We regularly have 3 users online and can see
some slowing down during that time. Up-load speeds are all over the
place...We've seen 30k to 1 mps but never really a problem for us. Downloads
can slow way down in the evening (when a lot of folks are online?) but
uploads increase about the same time. You can download about 1/2 of 2hr
movie before it restricts you to something like a 45k download because of
its fair access policy. In about 3-6 hrs you are back to normal. But
that's about the only time we can complain. Service has been very reliable.
>From what I can tell most everyone that offers satellite internet is
actually reselling Hughesnet. The ones that aren't have severely
restrictive fair access policies, as once you hit your monthly limit your
restricted the rest of the month. Our modem uses 20-25 watts.
We have a customer who's on a hilltop is able to get "line of sight" high
speed internet from the nearest town which is about 8 miles away. I think
they are about .5 mps but could spend more and get a faster service. Seems
like it's a lot less then Hughesnet.
Best,

Subject: satellite internet off-grid [RE-wrenches]
What are folks using these days for off-grid internet? The site in question
has no phone lines but good cell service. Broad-band is a must. Is cellular
broadband worth considering? Has satellite internet improved significantly
since it was last discussed here?
Thanks in advance.
