Steve:

Here's what we use:

http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00938216000P?vName=Tools&keyword=hammer

Available locally and only $20.00!

William Miller:

PS: Stud finders lie. We prefer the hammer. If you don't hear the right
sound, move up or down the roof. You need to find where the sheeting is in
direct contact with the rafter. The hammer, with practice, will get you at
least close to a rafter. Trace around the object you wish to install on the
roof. Drill a 1/8" hole within that area. Insert a bent stiff wire (we
use landscape flags). If the wire stops dead, you are on a rafter. If
not, spin it until the bent end contacts the rafter. Remove the wire
without rotating. The bend on the end will give the distance from your
pilot hole to the rafter.
