Maintenance contract (was Battery Fuel Gauge) [RE-wrenches]

Allan, we've been servicing systems for about 3 yrs now. We have a simple
contract for cleaning panels every 3 months. It used to give us a chance to
check the system. We charge an annual fee based on system size and
accesibility. Now we give a Fat Spaniel system away along with every large
system (haven't done anything under 20 Kw dc in a while.) We are starting to
look at SMA's monitoring system, hooked up our first today. The online
monitoring systems are great, when the system deviates from the "norm" we
dispatch a tech to check. We check performance online daily.

We have about a dozen customers who we see on a seasonal basis, typically
Spring and Fall. For them it's perfect; for others there's no interest.

I tried contracts years ago and never figured out a "Maintenance Contract"
that worked. The solution was... no contract. We call them when it's time,
set up an appointment, do the work, and bill at standard rates. For those
customers that want seasonal service, this works fine. A contract would just
get in the way of a simple arrangement.
