Hey Tom,
Yes for a single channel inverter, the 2 columns will be better than
the 2 rows. That way when the shade hits you'll still have full
production on half the array - rather than highly compromised output
on both strings. Also that west "column" will perform right up until
its shading time and then drop off more quickly - which will optimize
its use as well.
The same is true for the dual channel inverter.
