Sometimes low tech is appropriate-
I have a neighbor (an old dude that stayed in the south pacific after wwII
and is fond of repairing anything and everything with recycled used inner
tubes (he can fix duct tape with these!)).... anyway, he rigged up a
weighted float tied to a nylon line up and out the fill-tube... up to a 7'
tall post to a pulley and down to a (lighter) weight painted orange. He
looks out the window 200 yards away and sees what level his cistern is at.
